ED'S DESKALL I WANT FROM 2012 IS ...WITH THE START OF A NEW MOTOR RACING SEASON JUST AROUND THE CORNER, ROB MARGEIT OUTLINES HIS HOPES AND DREAMSAUTO ACTION'S EDITOR ROB MARGEIT COMMENTS ON RACING'S KEY ISSUESWELCOME TO 2012. The new season always brings optimism, new hope. The disappointments of another year are left behind, and the challenges of new season are fresh and exciting. And that's as true in motorsport is it is in life.As motor racing fans, we all have our own dreams and hopes. We live vicariously through our heroes on the track. When they celebrate, we do too. When they fail, we carry their disappointment as our own.But with fresh eyes and with the cup of hope filled to the brim, I'm looking ahead to season 2012 and hand the gods of motorsport my wish list of things I'd like to see this year.AN IN-FORM WEBBERLet's be honest. Mark Webber disappointed last year. One race win, some stirring fightbacks when all looked lost, and a couple of spectacular overtakes -most notably on Fernando Alonso through Eau Rouge -were not enough to redeem what was otherwise a flat season. Much was made of Webber's struggles with the new Pirellis. Now, with a season on the new rubber under his belt, I want to see the Mark Webber of old, the one who fought tooth and nail for race wins and world championships. It's not too much to ask for, is it?RICCIARDO SMASHES VERGNEWith Webber's career nearing its end, it's time to look to the future. For us Aussies, that means Daniel Ricciardo. Last year was very much a learning year with the backmarker HRT outfit. This year, he faces his toughest challenge yet in the shape of his own teammate Jean-Eric Vergne. Make no mistake; these two are fighting for the right to inherit Webber's Red Bull seat. The victor will have a chance to fight for grand prix wins and world championships. The loser? Who knows. Ask the gaggle of Red Bull Juniors who have come and gone before them.LOWNDES THE CONTENDERTaking nothing away from Jamie Whincup's triumph last year, for me the revelation was the resurgence of Craig Lowndes. After lagging behind Whincup for the past few seasons, Lowndes in 2011 took the fight to his teammate all year long. This year, I'd like to see more of that and I'd also like to see some mongrel. Forget the smiling 'we're all working together for the good of the team blah blah blah' spin - we want some real enmity. A healthy rivalry between teammates is a good thing for the team, but an unhealthy rivalry makes a fascinating narrative for the fans.STONER WINS ... AGAINDespite the switch to 1000cc, I'd like to see Casey Stoner continue to dominate MotoGP. And there's no reason he can't. As good as Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa are, I reckon Stoner is on another level. Valentino Rossi? Gone. Done. Past it. Stoner, on the other hand, is just starting to reach his peak. Five-ina-row to emulate the great Mick Doohan is not out of the question.WILL TO WINWill Power deserves an lndyCar title. He's won a bunch of races and been, generally, the best driver in the lndyCar field. But racing on ovals has been his Achilles Heel. That's not to say he's crap on ovals -he's not -but there is a queue of stronger oval racers ahead of him. This year, however, there are fewer oval races on the lndyCar calendar and that should play heavily into Power's favour. The only unknown is how the new-generation lndyCar will affect the established order. Let's hope that Team Penske has its heads around the new rig, and that Power can finally win the title that has eluded him the last two years.FPR FIGHTING FITVB Supercars needs a healthy and prosperous Ford Performance Racing. I'm probably starting to sound like a broken record, but it's vital that FPR hits 2012 at full throttle. Last year, its season was effectively over in any meaningful way by about April and that makes for a boring spectacle. As good as TeamVodafone is, dominance becomes boring very quickly. And using late-season form as guide, FPR is the team best-placed to challenge that dominance. So please, to the hard-working people at Campbellfield: get your shit together from the start of the season. That's my wish list. I'm sure you have your own. Feel free to bombard our flatchat@acpmagazines.com.au inbox with your own hopes and aspirations. See you at the track some time.
