FORD HITS 'MONTE'A Ford Escort being prepared for East African Safari at Ford's competition centre at Boreham, Essex. The Safari Rally begins on April 8 in Nairobi. Kenya and will finish on April 12. AUSSIECONTINGENT FORMALAYSIAAUSTRALIAN FORMULA ONE and Formula Two champions Max St_ewart ai:td Henk Woelders will lead an eightll!an Australian contingent to contest the Malaysian and Singapore Grand Pnx this year.Dual Australian champion Kevin Bartlett, currently competing m the Tasman series in New Zealand has told organisers he will be competing in a Formula T~o car.The drivers will contest two 150-mile races - one on the three mile public road circuit, Thompson Road, in Singapore and the other on the enclosed Batu Tiga circuit in Kuala Lumpur. The President of the Singapore Motor Sport Club (Mr. Alan Davis) and a representative of the Singapore Government (Inche Othman Omar) were in New Zealand for the NZGP to talk to drivers. They spent more than three days in Sydney finalising arrangements.Former Australian motorcycling champion Ron Toombs has also been secured to race in the supporting 150-mile motorcycle Grand Prix. The Australian motor racing contingent is -Stewart, Bartl~tt and Bob Muir (NSW), Tony Stewart and Woelders (Vic) and constructor-driver Garrie Cooper John McCormack and Malcolm Ramsay (South Australia).'At a p_ressconference held in Sydney at the offices of Malays1a-Smgapore A1rlines who heavily back the GP, Mr. Davis announced plans which might turn most Australian promoters sea-sick green with envy. Prize money has been increased from $40,000to $100 000 (Singapore) for the Singapore GP. ' In less impressive Australian currency that still adds up to $28,000.More than 100,000spectators are expected at the Thompson Road circuit on April 1 - closed to all public traffic for the entire six days of practice and racing.Because the circuit winds through the streets it's virtually impossible for spectators to see much more than the corner in front of them.To compensate organisers will place giant four-foot television screens at strategic points around the circuit to show instant action from other parts of the track.Negotiations are underway with an Australian announcer to fly to Singapore to call the Grand Prix with local commentators. The announcer would concentrate almost entirely on the Australian contingent. There is a possibility an edited half-hour or hour videotape of both the car and bike races may be televised in Australia less than 24 hours after the GP's finish.Competitors and their cars will fly free to Singapore by MSA and they will stay all-expenses paid at the best hotels."We've asked them this year not to drive their cars through the public streets· because it attracts too much attention,•· Davis says with tongue implanted firmly in cheek.Although he doesn't intend fielding cars this year, Alec Mildren was at the MSA press conference - just to lend moral support to Davis. And that's fitting tribute to a team of promoters who's only paid employee is an office girl. When they get professional - who knows how well they'll go.FORD TEAM IN MONTE CARLO RALLYFORD IS ENTERING a strong challenge in the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally (January 21-29) with a two-car works team of Ford Escort RS1600's.
