PETER BROCK• I suppose all you readers out there in holiday land have imagined that race drivers have an exotic vacation on some tropical island in between seasonal committments. Well. maybe some do but this one definitely hasn't.(Oh yea -well, Brock, try explaining away that lazy lunch down at the San Remo pub. I'll bet you'/ say you had something important like filming a commercial at Phillip Island race track on!- Ed.). Come this time of the year and everyone seem·s to go in for the big changes.New cars. new sponsors and new circuits even if it is on the eve of the Tasman series. But for my part I've found it damn near impossible to get anything done - everyone's due back on the 17th or something!Your h"ard-working Editor has been goading me into writing this column knowning full well (a) I've been extremely busy and (b) what I've been busy on I can't necessarily disclose anyway! But there are a couple of kittens I can let slip out of that proverbial bag.FILMMAKINGBesides my own business which does of course require some attention from time to time. there has been quite a rush of film making, talks and so on coupled with work for the Holden Dealer Team.I really haven't had time to even think about that tropical island.NEWH.D.T.PROJECTS• Although I've had no actual driving to occupy my interests with the HOT, I have spent considerable time on a couple of projects with Harry Firth. While it is my duty to bring news and comment to you readers. it is nevertheless not very intelligent to go around making rash statements and predictions for forthcoming events - motor racing is far to unpredictable for that. And that is a real problem at present for much of our current testing work is based on experiments we can't finalise until the next time out.TORINA 202One of these is the new 202 cid Torana XU-1 s.The engine gives some 30 bhp more and 40 ft.fib. of torque which we feel is going to give the opposition a fiar shake. The car itself has a softer. higher ride. a 'new fasia assembly and new wrap around bucket seats. With the wider torque band. the new Torana series will be a beat road car and I believe the release date is imminent (January 29. in fact - Ed).SPORTSEDANVB• The other project is a sports sedan Torana which we have under test but in a fairly mild state of time at present. A 253 VS has been shoe-horned into the car simply to see if it fits and what the handling will be like. The handling by the way has been a very pl_easant surprise. And with that settled we'll give it some horsepower - even if in small doses. But that's mainly a fun project for us as the 202 cid series cars and the Tasman championship are of prime importance.BONDATCATALINA• My next outing is at Lakeland hillclimb this weekend for the first heat of the 1972 championship followed by a run at Catalina Park, Katoomba in the rallycross at the end of the month. Colin Bond will drive his rally car which we hope to have fitted out with a 202 cid XU-1 engine. As I'll be running it in up to Sydney I think. if it shows any real threat I might suggest a swap for my blown 1 86 machine.Come to think of it I'd love to get some other driver's comments on the old girl.(But Brockie, I've already offered Harry AUTO AC TION's evaluation services. any time! - Ed.).
