RALLY NEWSCITY ST ATE RACING will hit the big-time for 1972 with a fully fledged assault on the East African Safari. The crew will of course be headed by endurance rally exp~rt Stewart McLeod.McLeod will drive a locally prepared Torana XU-1 which will be shipped to Kenya shortly, for the rally which starts on March 30 and goes to Arpil 3.The enterprise will not be HDT supported although Harry Firth is lending his qualified hand to preparation advice.The City-State McLeod combo will also contest the local national and state rally titles. Either Adrian Mortimer or Jack Lock will sit in for the local rallies while local Kenyan, Peter Huth, will be the tour guide (!)for the East African.McLeod will also compete in the Heatway and Papuan Safari international events.McLeod is currently looking to going back to circuit racing after his exploits in the Dulux rally last year.CURRENT SA RALLY CHAMP, Tom (no pads) Barr­ Smith will head-up a local Renault works drive while the preserve of British Leyland rallying will be John Taylor and Graham West (CAMS Chairman) in the Taylor's of Menindie ex-works Austin 1800.South Australia will be a hot-seat of rallying with ace navigator and driver, Garry Chapman returning to the sport. Chapman was running third outright in the 1970round-Australia Ampol Trial when his privately-entered Capri ' crashed due to a broken suspension near Bruthen.Chapman was severely injured.Garry will campaign a Datsun in state events but hop to compete in both the BP and Southern Cross rallies.MIKE OSBORNE, one of Australia's top rally navigato1 is walking again after a nasty head-on accident near Yan Glen returning from spectating on the Alpine Rally.
